Physical Therapy Spotlight

Janice Deschenes PT, DPT, MS

October is National Physical Therapy month, and we could not let the month pass by without celebrating our very own Physical Therapist, Janice Deschenes PT, DPT, MS. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Janice to ask her about what makes her who she is as a professional and why Physical Therapy is so important.

Janice with her husband, Chris

Janice received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Simmons College, a private university in Boston. Coincidentally, her 20th year reunion was this past weekend! Her passion for education is evident as she recently completed her Doctorate in PT at Utica College in August. Janice also teaches Physical Therapy courses at the University of St. Augustine. When she is not working, Janice enjoys spending time with her husband, a Marine Engineer, and her two children, Isabella and Brady.

Janice is a big Red Sox fan!

Why did you choose to work in Pediatrics?

“I fell in love with Pediatrics after a rotation in college at a Children’s hospital. Kids want to work. Kids want to get better. It’s a lot of fun. You can see the most growth. It is exciting to see the progression."

Brady (He was named after Tom Brady!)

Why may a child need Physical Therapy?

“A child may need Physical Therapy if he or she is presented with any muscle tightness which limits their mobility, weakness which may not allow them to hold certain positions, or balance and coordination issues as well. I also can assess how a child walks and for the need of orthotics due to foot position. Children who are born prematurely or have tightness in the neck causing Torticollis can also benefit from PT to prevent abnormal muscle imbalances and decreased flexibility which may contribute to delayed gross motor milestones.”

Isabella turns 12 this year.

Why is it important that a child be treated early on?

“It is important for a child to receive PT to address the limitations they present with so that they are efficient with their motor skills and mobility (walking, running). Physical therapists specialize in child development from infant to adulthood. They can provide valuable information to parents on how to hand and hold their infants in order to foster age-appropriate development and mobility in their children”

Family Time

What are some techniques unique to your therapy?

“It’s a little more alternative, but I like to use Craniosacral Therapy. It uses a very light, noninvasive touch. It’s all about restrictions.”

What are your hobbies outside of your work?

“I’m usually on the Lacrosse field with both my son and my daughter. I love gardening as well. I love to keep flowers in my house. I love to get outside and walk the dog.”

What kind of dog do you have?

“We have 1 Springer Spaniel, she’s 9, and her name is Mazzie.”

Mazzie is a Springer Spaniel.

If you could take an expense free trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?

“Bavaria, Germany. I would love to go to Europe to visit the more obscure places”

What is your favorite restaurant in the area?

“I'm new to the area so I am always looking for new restaurants to try! I really like Nona Blue and Salt Life!”

How do you relax and wind down after a busy day?

“I love the beach!”

Janice's happy place is the beach.
