OT Spotlight: Georganna Walker

In honor of Occupational Therapy month, we wanted to celebrate one of our amazing occupational therapists, Georganna Walker! We love therapist highlights here at Coastal because it gives us a chance to brag about the incredible people that make our team so awesome! Georganna makes this easy with her many years of experience in the pediatric OT field along with her incredibly positive attitude and compassion for all the kids she treats. Georganna joined our Coastal Family in 2013 and has been a very valuable team member ever since. Check out our recent highlight interview with Georganna below to learn more!

Tell us a little about why you decided to become an OT?

"In high school, I was in a medical exploration group.  I went to college for Physical Therapy and quickly changed to Occupational Therapy.  OT is a field that uses the activities that are most important to people as the basis and end goal of therapy.  I love helping people and empowering others to help themselves… discovering their strengths and confidence in themselves to succeed. OT is a profession that has never felt like a job."

What areas have you practiced in and what would you say is your favorite?

"I started in adult acute care at a large regional hospital in Florence, SC.  My practice scope has included mental health (pediatric and adult), school system, pediatric acute and outpatient settings.  The field of pediatrics has always been my passion.  Although I have recently retired from working at our local children's hospital, I loved being a therapist in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit."

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

"Ability to connect with patients and their families on an individual level and make an impact on the child's performance.  Helping someone succeed and smile after accomplishing an activity or task they couldn’t do before."

What is the most challenging part of your job?

"Supporting parents in the process of raising children with special needs.  As a parent, I know the challenge of trying to see past the daily grind and looking at the bigger picture."
